What is Ikebana?

Ikebana is the ancient  Japanese art of using flowers and other plant materials to create an arrangement strongly connected to Japanese way of life . Like many other Japanese art forms, such as calligraphy, the tea ceremony and haiku pottery, ikebana is a discipline based on a fundamental way of life.

Ikebana is better translated as “living flowers” or making flowers come alive. the word itself can be separated in to two parts, ike and hana: hana or bana means flower or plant;ike comes from three verbs, ikeru, ikiru, and ikasu. Respectively, these mean “to place or arrange plants”, “to live”, and “to make life clearer”. When the japanese refer to the art of using flowers , they often say  ohana. In japanese adding the letter O to a word conveys a feeling of respect. In this case, it indicates a special attitude to flowers.
